Tiny but crucial
The bank vole is a little rodent with a large importance to the forest. This little vole might have up to four litters of up to ten baby voles in one year! They become food for many other animals – each vole only lives about five months, but lucky ones might live up to two years. Bank voles eat grasses, leaves, and herbs, but might also eat insects. In the fall and winter, it will mostly eat mushrooms and lichen.
Bank voles are found throughout Uppland.
In the winter, the bank vole has some protection hiding beneath the snow. It’s warmer under the surface, and easier to hide from its many predators.
