Eagle Owl

Latin: Bubo bubo (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Berguv
Deutsch: Uhu

World’s largest owl
The eagle owl takes considerably larger prey than other owls: large rats, water birds, and hares. Weighing about four kilos, this owl is the world’s largest. It will often chase all other owls away from its home area.

The large owl pellet in the winter diorama came from an eagle owl. Inside it are bones from three different domestic ducks the owl had eaten before it coughed up the pellet!

Eagle owls are rarely seen in the archipelago. 150 years ago, the eagle owl was considerably more common in Uppland. Near the end of the 19th century, prize money was introduced for the eagle owl, so 328 of them were killed in Uppsala county between 1885 and 1900. After 1980, the eagle owl has recovered somewhat in Uppland, and now there are about 25 pairs in the county.
