What´s that smell?
The rowan blooms just before summer, and stinks a little like cat urine or rotten fish. This scent is picked up by flesh flies who then pollinate the tree.
Rowan can be found in forests and agricultural land all throughout Uppland.
Some winters, the rowan has many berries left over. These are a very important winter food resource for birds like thrushes and waxwings, who eat the berries and spread the rowan’s seeds. The pine grosbeak, though, picks out the seeds before eating, so they don’t contribute to the seed spread.
