Northern Hawk-Owl
Latin: Surnia ulula (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Hökuggla
Deutsch: Sperbereule
Occasional visitor
Some winters, the Northern hawk-owl pops up in Uppland. You will usually find it sitting on its favourite branch, scouting for voles. Its yellow eyes have a piercing gaze, just like a hawk.
The Northern hawk-owl is considered to be an owl of Norrland, but they have nested in Uppland on at least four occasions.
Northern hawk-owls are quite active during the day, and in the winter, you might even see one hunting around Kungsängen. Occasionally, many of these owls will fly south at the same time. The Northern hawk-owl is probably the easiest owl to see in Uppland… except for the fact that some years they don't turn up at all!
