Sea Plants on Dry Land

Sea Plants on Dry Land

In the King’s Meadow (Kungsängen) and Ekoln's beaches south of Uppsala, plants have been found which are normally only found by the sea. When Linnaeus was wandering in the King’s Meadow outside Uppsala, he saw two noteworthy plants: sea arrowgrass and sea milkweed. Linneaus was surprised, because these plants are normally only found along the coast. He came to the conclusion that the King’s Meadow was once a shore meadow by the sea… and he was right! A thousand years ago, the King’s Meadow was right by the ocean.

Nature is undergoing continuous change. Sea arrowgrass and sea milkweed disappeared from the King’s Meadow in the 19th century, but there is still one seaside plant near Uppsala. Sea thrift grows on dry slopes around Lugnet and Pustnäs, just south of Nåntuna, on the eastern shore of the Fyris river.

There is one more exciting plant which used to grow on Ekoln’s beaches. Perhaps you can find one? It's the strawberry clover, a common plant along sea shores. As recently as ten years ago, it could be found in the shore meadows east of Krusenberg.
