’Bothnian’ Hairgrass
Latin: Deschampsia bottnica (Wahlenb.) Trin.
Svenska: Gultåtel (’yellow hairgrass’)
The Baltic Sea’s golden border
There are many different species of grasses in the world. The ‘Bothnian’ hairgrass, though, is found only in the Baltic Sea - nowhere else!
Bothnian hairgrass is common around islands in the archipelago. This plant stands farthest out on the beach with its roots under the water.
The grass blooms in July, but you can see the grass in the archipelago as long as the water remains free of ice.
