European Sprat

Latin: Sprattus sprattus
Svenska: Skarpsill
Deutsch: Europäische Sprotte

Never alone
The European sprat lives in shoals. They swim near the surface at night, and down to the sea floor during the day.

The European sprat eats zooplankton like copepods and cladocerans, as well as tiny fish larvae. Cod and auks such as guillemots and razorbills will in turn eat the European sprat.

European sprats are found in the Baltic Sea, but also in the Atlantic from Lofoten in Norway to Africa, and in the Mediterranean Sea.
