The King’s Meadow (Kungsängen)

Kungsängen lies just south of Uppsala. It’s an unusual meadow, rich in bird life, where the hay is cut by volunteers in the end of July or beginning of August. There’s a barn in the middle of the meadow that you can enter. Through the window in the upper part of the barn, you might see Eurasian curlews, Northern lapwings, or common snipes if you’re there in May. In late May, Kungsängen will also be full of blooming snake’s head flowers, the county flower of Uppland. Known as the King’s Meadow lily in Swedish, this spot lent its name to the purple flower.
