Water Vole

Latin: Arvicola amphibius (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Vattensork
Deutsch: Ostschermaus

Avoiding daylight
The water vole lives in his underground passages, and does not often willingly come up into daylight. The only traces we see of the water vole are the small piles of soil that are built up when they dig their tunnels.

The water vole is found throughout Uppland – not only by water, despite its name.

In the autumn, the water vole will build a store of food for the winter within his underground passages. The vole is awake throughout the winter, but is less active than during the summer.
