Spotted Crake

Latin: Porzana porzana (Linné 1766)
Svenska: Småfläckig sumphöna
Deutsch: Tüpfelsumpfhuhn

Well camouflaged whistler
He blends in well with the vegetation, but the spotted crake is there, near the mute swan. Not many can spot him, but more will be able to hear his whistling all through the night.

This species seems to have been more common in the past, with more regular returns to the wetlands of Uppland. Many of the horsetail and sedge marshes that the spotted crake likes have grown over during the 20th century. Spotted crakes eat insects and other small creatures that they can catch in the shallow water.

Spotted crakes migrate in August and September to the Western Mediterranean and to sub-Saharan Africa, returning from late April to the beginning of May. One bird which was ringed near Ledskär in November 1960 was found the following January in the Camargue in southern France.
