Common Snipe
Latin: Gallinago gallinago (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Enkelbeckasin
Deutsch: Bekassine
Humming nosediver
Male common snipes want to be seen! A male snipe will do a nosedive and spread out two of its rear tail feathers, which vibrate in the wind to make a humming sound!
Common snipes are relatively easy to find in Uppland. If you want to see one diving and humming, you should walk along Linnaeus’ 'Danmark' path to Kungsängen in May.
These birds migrate between July and the beginning of November to the British Isles, France, and Spain. They return in early April. A few common snipes spend the winter in Uppland every year.
