Great Bittern

Latin: Botaurus stellaris (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Rördrom
Deutsch: Rohrdommel

The stilt-walker
The Great Bittern walks among the reeds and uses the reed straws as stilts. Great bitterns are seldom seen - it´s usually only their deep voice that reveals their presence. These birds eat fish, frogs and sometimes aquatic insects.

Great bitterns are found in lakes rich in reeds. In Uppland, they mostly live in the bays of Mälaren.

Sometimes, a Great bittern will attempt to spend the winter in Uppland, though the majority of these birds migrate southwards. They will head south in October and will normally return in mid-March.
