Snake’s Head Flower

Snake's Head Flower

Did you know that Uppland county’s symbolic flower is the snake’s head? It spread from what is today the Linneaus Garden out to Kungsängen in the 18th century. Carl Linneaus found several there in the 1740’s. After a few years, they began to spread. Just like many other plants, the snake’s head came to Uppland with the help of mankind. The snake’s head is originally from southeastern Europe, though Uppland’s flowers likely came from the Netherlands, where they were grown for ornamental purposes in the 17th century. Today, the snake’s head has spread around the county and does well in damp meadows throughout Uppland.
