Common Pochard
Latin: Aythya ferina (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Brunand
Deutsch: Tafelente
’Night owls’
Common pochards are awake all night. During the day, you might see them sleeping – they often have their heads nestled under their dorsal feathers. They use what is available to them, since they can’t just close the curtains!
You will find common pochards along large lowland lakes and bays, like Hjälstaviken or Ledskär, between May and July.
These birds migrate to Western Europe and Mediterranean countries between September and November. They return in early April.
