Common Tern
Latin: Sterna hirundo (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Fisktärna
Deutsch: Fluss-Seeschwalbe
Helicopter bird
Common terns are skilled fliers. They can hold themselves up in the air at the same point by flapping their wings somewhat like a helicopter's blades. When they see a fish, they dive boldly down into the water.
The common tern may be found on islands, beaches by inland lakes, and near the coast. Skarholmen is a good place to see common terns close to Uppsala.
Between late July and early September, the common tern migrates to South Africa, to return in late April.
