Snake’s Head Flower

Latin: Fritillaria meleagris
Svenska: Kungsängslilja
Deutsch: Schachblume

Uppland's flower
The snake’s head flower, Uppland County’s official flower, is not native to Uppland. It escaped from Linnaeus’s garden as early as the 17th century. Nowadays, we come across this flower in many places around Uppsala.

The snake’s head is common on beaches and lakeside meadows around Uppsala, but may still be found further away from the city. If you want to see the snake’s head flower, visit Kungsäng around the 20th of May.

The snake’s head flower overwinters as seeds and bulbs in the earth. Around the 18th-20th of May, these flowers begin to bloom. After only a few days, grassy plains can be completely covered with these beautiful flowers.
