European Otter

Latin: Lutra lutra (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Utter
Deutsch: Fischotter

Skilled fishers
Otters are playful, and in the winter they happily slide around on the snow. Otters are skilled fishers, but they might also eat frogs, crustaceans, and insects.

European otters are sparsely distributed throughout lakes and watercourses all over Uppland. Otters were quite common during the 1800’s. There was a significant decrease in the 1900's due to hunting and to the pollutants DDT and PCB; however, the population has begun to recover.
