Tufted Duck
Latin: Aythya fuligula (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Vigg
Deutsch: Reiherente
Protected by terns
The tufted duck often builds its nest near tern colonies. It will be protected from predators there, because terns are quite aggressive towards mink and white-tailed eagles!
Tufted ducks are common in the archipelago and also around inland lakes in Uppland.
These birds migrate from the end of July to November towards southern Sweden and Western Europe, returning in March or April.
