Mallard
Latin: Anas platyrhynchos (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Gräsand
Deutsch: Stockente
A well known oldie
Mallards can live for up to 25 years. They gather in large flocks in the winter, when the male’s plumage is at its finest.
The mallard is common throughout Uppland. They are found near lakes and watercourses, but also in cities and smaller communities if there is water nearby. They can be found around Svandammen (the swan pond) in Uppsala all year round, and by the ‘Övre Föret’ in the Fyris river, as long as there is open water.
Many mallards spend the winter in Uppsala. Others migrate southwards in Sweden and to the North Sea countries from August to November, returning in March or April.
