The Forest Hotel

Everyone needs somewhere to live. What is your house made of? Wood? In that case, your house is built out of the same material chosen by woodpeckers, tits, Boreal owls, and Eurasian pygmy owls! While the woodpeckers can peck out their own home, the others depend on the woodpecker to abandon his old homes so they can move in. Luckily for them, woodpeckers build a new home every year.

Even though the woodpeckers are always pecking new holes, there still aren’t enough homes for birds in the forest. You can help – build a birdhouse!

Many plants and animals are dependent on large trees. One such tree is the aspen. Uppland’s county insect, Cucujus cinnaberinus, as well as the county moss, Neckera pennata, depend on old aspen trees in the forest. Aspen is also a favourite of the black woodpecker and Great spotted woodpecker, due to its relatively soft wood.
