Poplar Admiral

Latin: Limenitis populi (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Aspfjäril
Deutsch: Großer Eisvogel

Bad smell? No way!
The poplar admiral is not in agreement with us on what smells bad. What we think is stinky, the poplar admiral is drawn to. If you want to attract it, you should lay out a well-aged cheese. It is also attracted to rotting meat, and waste from carnivores.

This butterfly is found in mixed forests in Uppland.

The poplar admiral lays its eggs in aspen trees, and overwinters as a larva (caterpillar) which eats aspen leaves. When winter approaches, the larva forms an aspen leaf into a sheltering envelope. When the leaves begin to bloom, they creep out of their shelter.

They pupate around the second half of June. The adult butterflies fly from about the end of June to the end of July… Maybe you’ll see one on your summer holiday?
