Spotted Flycatcher
Latin: Muscicapa striata (Pallas 1764)
Svenska: Grå flugsnappare
Deutsch: Grauschnäpper
Insect ambusher
The spotted flycatcher sits on a favourite branch, waiting for an insect to approach. Then, the bird flies out, quick as lightning, and catches the insect in midair with a snapping noise. The spotted flycatcher then returns to its favourite branch, preparing for another ambush.
These birds are relatively common near settlements.
They migrate from August to September towards southern Africa, returning in late May.
