Pine Hawk-moth
Latin: Sphinx pinastri
Svenska: Tallsvärmare
Deutsch: Kiefernschwärmer
Hummingbird of the night
The pine hawk-moth flies along richly flowered paths on summer nights. It especially likes the lesser butterfly-orchid. Pine hawk-moths 'float' in the air like hummingbirds, and suck nectar from the butterfly-orchid's flowers.
Pine hawk-moths are found in coniferous forests throughout Uppland.
The pine hawk-moth lays its eggs in pine trees. After several weeks, the eggs hatch and the larvae live on the pine's cones. The larvae pupate in early September, and the pupae then hatch after the winter, in May.
