Black Woodpecker
Latin: Dryocopus martius (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Spillkråka
Deutsch: Schwarzspecht
Largest woodpecker in Europe
The black woodpecker is Europe's largest woodpecker. It uses its powerful beak to pluck out insecs and to carve out new homes in living trees, preferably in aspens.
Black woodpeckers are quite common in coniferous and mixed forests all over Uppsala county. Take a walk through Nåsen, Fiby Urskog or along Linneaus' Jumkil path if you want to try to catch a glimpse of one.
These birds stay in Uppland all year round.
