Lesser Spotted Woodpecker
Latin: Dryobates minor (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Mindre hackspett
Deutsch: Kleinspecht
Small and quiet
The lesser spotted woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in Europe - not much bigger than a sparrow. Unlike other woodpeckers, it is relatively quiet, and doesn't drum on trees very often.
Lesser spotted woodpeckers are found in deciduous forests with dying trees. The population has declined during the 20th century and the woodpecker is now red-listed. A good place to spot one of these woodpeckers is at Wik castle just outside Uppsala.
These birds generally stay in Uppland all year, but some years they might leave both the county and the country.
