Norway Spruce
Latin: Picea abies (Linné 1753)
Svenska: Gran
Deutsch: Gemeine Fichte
Green gold
The Norway spruce wandered in to Uppland about 2500 years ago. Many of the spruces in Uppland today were planted on old meadowland. The Norway spruce is the most important type of wood for the entire Swedish forest industry.
Norway spruce is found all throughout Uppland. Linneaus gave the tree its scientific name right here in Kronoparken in Uppsala!
This species blooms in May. In the winter, the cones remain on the branches.
