Norrland's Border
Is Uppsala in northern or southern Sweden? Someone from Norrland would likely say Uppsala is in southern Sweden, but someone from Skåne would say it's in northern Sweden.
The truth is that Uppland is a part of both. Our forests and bogs can feel quite 'northern' and our grazing lands can feel quite 'southern'. Man has influenced these landscapes for a long time, and has created and maintained open landscapes home to many 'southern' species. In coniferous forests and wetlands, 'northern' plants and animals thrive. Uppland is a mosaic of different types of nature.
Selma Lagerlöf, a Swedish author, understood this mosaic. In her story 'Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey,' she tells of how Old Woman Uppland went out into Sweden to scrounge up pieces of the other counties.
