Long-tailed Duck
Latin: Clangula hyemalis (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Alfågel
Deutsch: Eisente
A speedy bird
Several million long-tailed ducks spend the winter near the Baltic Sea. When they have decided to fly northwards, it doesn’t take long. In May they fly north without resting, with a speed greater than 80 km/h!
The long-tailed duck builds its nest near lakes in the mountains.
If Väddö is free of ice during the winter, you might see up to 6000 long-tailed ducks gathering there. Other good places to see them are Rönnskärsudde and Skatudden. The first of these ducks normally shows up in Uppland around September.
