Star-tipped Reindeer Lichen
Latin: Cladonia stellaris
Svenska: Fönsterlav (vitmossa)
Deutsch: Alpen-Rentierflechte
Moisture barrier
In earlier times, star-tipped reindeer lichen was placed between windowpanes in order to absorb moisture (hence the Swedish name, ‘window lichen’). Today, this lichen is most known for its use as a decoration in advent wreaths at Christmas time.
Star-tipped reindeer lichen grows on dry and rocky ground throughout Uppland.
This lichen, along with other lichens, grow only when they are damp. They are completely dry throughout the greater part of the year. Some lichens only grow for a few days a year!
