Lapland Longspur

Latin: Calcarius lapponicus (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Lappsparv
Deutsch: Spornammer

Heading East
Most of the birds flying past Uppland in the autumn are going to spend the winter in Europe or Africa. Not the Lapland longspur, though. He heads eastward instead, to southern Russia and Turkey!

The Lapland longspur is a bird of the mountains. The closest nesting place of these birds is in Dalarna, but if you want to see one in Uppland, head out in September. Try Ledskär in the northern part of the county, or even Lövstaslätten just outside Uppsala.

Lapland longspurs pass by Uppland in September on their way southwards and in mid-April to mid-May on their way northwards.
