Short-eared Owl
Latin: Asio flammeus (Pontoppidan 1763)l
Svenska: Jorduggla
Deutsch: Sumpfohreule
Wing-clapper
The short-eared owl have a pretty distinct behaviour - it flies around with a dampened hooting sound and applauds itself by clapping its wings together.
This owl is uncommon in Uppland, only a few nests have been recorded. In the 1800's, the short-eared owl nested in boglands around Uppsala and pastures in Uppsala's plains. If you want to see one today, try Hjälstaviken or Kungsängen between February and April. You'll need a bit of luck, though!
The short-eared own migrates to boglands in northern Sweden, flying by Uppland in the spring and the fall. Some owls spend the winter in Uppland, but others fly considerably farther south - some fly all the way to Africa!
