Red-necked Phalarope
Latin: Phalaropus lobatus (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Smalnäbbad simsnäppa
Deutsch: Odinshühnchen
Spinning in a ring
The red-necked phalarope has lobed toes to help it swim. These birds often swim in circles, creating little whirlpools and eating the insects and other creatures that are swept up in the water.
The closest nests of red-necked phalaropes are in northern Dalarna, though you might see one of these birds if you head over to Hjälstaviken in late May.
Red-necked phalaropes migrate to the Indian Ocean from July to September, passing by Uppland on their way southwards. They spend the winter there, and sometimes will rest in Uppland on their way up north again.
