Whimbrel
Latin: Numenius phaeopus (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Småspov
Deutsch: Regenbrachvogel
Whinnying
The whimbrel looks a lot like an Eurasian curlew. The best way to tell the difference is by listening to their song. The whimbrel sounds nervous, almost like it is whinnying!
Whimbrels build their nests in the mountains and wetlands of Norrland. If you want to see one, head to Hjälstaviken or Lekskär in early May or late July.
These birds pass by Uppland in late June to early September. They are on their way to western Africa, from Senegal south to the Congo, where they will spend the winter. Most will pass by on their way northwards in early May.
