Common Redpoll

Latin: Acanthis flammea (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Gråsiska
Deutsch: Birkenzeisig

Winter birds
During the winter, one can meet flocks of common redpolls by the shores of lakes. They eat the seeds from alder and birch trees… a great bird-watching tip for those who enjoy Nordic skating!

The closest place that common redpolls raise their young is in Dalarna. Occasionally one will build its nest in Uppland, but the last recorded occurrence of this was in 1975, by Skatudden, Väddö.

Some winters, many redpolls come to Uppland’s bird feeders. This normally happens on their way south in October, and on their way north in March.
