White-throated Dipper

Latin: Cinclus cinclus (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Strömstare
Deutsch: Wasseramsel

The little diving priest
The white-throated dipper's plumage makes it look a bit like a priest. All year round, it wades into the water looking for insects, sometimes even diving down to the bottom! It uses its wings and the water's pressure to help it move downwards.

A small number of white-throated dippers raise their young in Uppland each year. In the winter, when it is looking for waterways free of ice, you might catch a glimpse of one of these birds by Kvarnfallet (small waterfall by the mill) in central Uppsala!

Many white-throated dippers from Norrland will spend the winter in Uppland, arriving in October and flying northwards in April.
