Brown Bear
Latin: Ursus arctos (Linné 1758)
Svenska: Brunbjörn
Deutsch: Braunbär
The sleeping bear
In late autumn, the bears go into hibernation. They have built up their fat reserves by eating up the forest’s berries. They look for passable burrows in the ground and then goes to sleep there through the whole winter. Female brown bears give birth to their young within the burrow, and may spend up to seven months inside with them!
Male brown bears wander long distances. Some pass through Uppland. Occasionally, they might even hibernate here. If you want to see bear tracks, though, it’s better to travel to Dalarna where the bears are much more common.
