Common Greenshank
Latin: Tringa nebularia (Gunnerus 1767)
Svenska: Gluttsnäppa
Deutsch: Grünschenkel
Winter is coming
Common greenshanks fly by Uppland in May, on their way north. However, around Midsummer the females are already on their way south again. They serve as a reminder, during the Midsummer festivities, that ‘autumn is coming soon’!
The common greenshank nests near bogs, the closest nesting site to Uppland is in Gästrikland. If you want to see common greenshanks, you should visit Hjälstaviken in early May or June.
Common greenshanks pass by Uppland when they fly southwards between the end of June and October. They spend the winter in tropical and southern Africa, and pass by again on their way northwards in May.
